Concept

The ATAWHAI Charitable Trust will be running the Gisborne Marathon in 2017, the first marathon to see the sunrise. We’ll use this as a platform to promote our strong cultural base within our region having some of the best kapa haka teams in New Zealand. We have some of the most scenic beaches in New Zealand, one of a kind natural resources in our back yard with the Rere rock falls. Our strong wine making industry adds to the vista of our region and will promote the newly developed Oneroa walkway.

The course will traverse through all our Iconic places:

  • Okitu Beach
  • Titirangi
  • Oneroa Walkway
  • Cook’s monument

Why are we wanting to run this event?

ATAWHAI Charitable Trust aspires to work with local, regional, central government and other providers to ensure that this event will enhance the social, economic, cultural and environmental development of the Tairawhiti region. The trust also hopes to create an entrepreneurial attitude amongst all residents of Tairawhiti especially young people and to encourage a community where business, social and environmental communities work together to leave a legacy for the next generation.

The ATAWHAI Charitable Trust would like to utilise this event as the main source of income to fund the following initiatives:

  • ATAWHAI Youth Mentoring Programme (targets Year 7-8 students)
  • ATAWHAI Leadership Programme (week long courses based at the Army, Navy, Police, & Fire Service training bases)
  • Kokiri Kai & Tyndall Road Community Gardens
